Self Publishing Pros and Cons

It’s important to make your list of self publishing pros and cons to make sure it is the right decision for you BEFORE you decide to self publish your book. Just in case you need some help getting that list started…..

My List of Self–Publishing Pros:

•       You are in charge of your own future

•       The title, cover, trim size and price are set by you

•       You earn more money per copy sold

•       Traditional publishing is very slow—it can take up to three years to see a finished book. By self-publishing, you are in charge of your own timeline.

•       If you’re willing to take the risk—and make the investment—you get to keep most of the return

•       You are both the Author and the Publisher

•       You understand that the future of publishing is moving online and out of brick and mortar stores

•       It has become far more cost-effective

My List of Self-Publishing Cons:

•       You may not fully understand what you’re getting in to

•       You are responsible for your own success or failures

•       If your book fails, you will lose your money

•       Buyers at the major accounts don’t know who you are

•       It can be difficult to get in to bookstores

•       The producers at major media outlets won’t take your call

•       It’s easy to get lost in the millions of books available on Amazon

•       It can be a full-time job

As you can see, there are a lot of self publishing pros and cons to think about when deciding to publish a book. Be sure to take the time at the beginning of the process to decide what option makes the most sense for you. Doing so will avoid a lot of headache and heartache on down the line.
