Self Publishing Red Flags

Self Publishing Red Flags

Authors: Beware of these self publishing red flags.

Self publishing companies have been in the news recently for a variety of reasons (including lawsuits). Because of this, I thought I would provide my list of “red flags” to look out for when you are dealing with any type of self-publishing companies. If one or more of these occurs, run—don’t walk—far far away!

Self publishing red flags to keep on your radar:

•  They “own” your source files when you’re done publishing a book

•  All of your money is spent on “marketing”

•  They have bad feedback on Editors & Predators and Writers Beware

•  They refuse to send you their contract

•  They tell you they’re “publishing” you but you’re spending all the money

•  They refuse to send you sample books

•  You don’t understand the contract and you can’t get a person on the phone to explain it to you

•  They tell you that your book will be in bookstores everywhere

•  Their prices seem unusually high compared to other places

•  They “guarantee” you will sell lots of books if you follow their model

•  If you feel uncomfortable…there’s probably a good reason

These are just a few self publishing red flags to be aware of when you publish your book. Feel free share from your own experience in the comments section below!
